WOODBRIDGE SUPPORT GROUP STARTING UP AGAIN

It’s understandable to feel concerned about how someone might react when you share something personal and sensitive like your diagnosis. However, being open and honest is essential for building trust in any relationship, and if she truly cares for you, she will appreciate your vulnerability. Here’s how you can approach the conversation:

  1. Choose the Right Time: Pick a time when you feel comfortable and there’s no rush. You want to have a calm, uninterrupted conversation.

  2. Start by Expressing Your Feelings: Let her know how much you value her and enjoy the connection you’ve been building. Share that you’re opening up because you care about her and the potential of the relationship.

  3.  Be Honest, but Focus on the Positive: Explain your condition clearly and calmly. You might say something like:  “I want to share something important with you because I value being open. I have a neurological condition called multiple sclerosis, which led to my early retirement. It can be challenging at times, but I’m managing it well and living my life fully.”

  4.  Emphasize Your Strengths: After sharing the diagnosis, highlight how you’re handling it and the support you have. Focus on the fact that your condition doesn’t define who you are or what you’re capable of in life and in relationships.

  5. Give Her Space to React: Understand that she may need time to process the information. Be patient and allow her to ask questions. Answer honestly, but don’t feel like you need to share every detail right away.

  6. Reassure Her: If you sense any hesitancy, let her know that you’re still the same person she’s been getting to know, and you hope that this information doesn’t change the way she feels.

Ultimately, if she’s the right person for you, she’ll appreciate your honesty and respect you even more for sharing this part of your life.
